Newborns admitted to the intensive care unit need close monitoring by specialists even after discharge because they are at a higher risk for malnutrition, developmental delay, visual or hearing problems, behavioral problems, etc. A physiatrist specializing in pediatric rehabilitation evaluates the developmental status of the infant regularly to detect possible problems. Early detection of some problems may minimize further problems. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, parental education, or referral to other specialists can be applied based on the emerging problems of the child.
