What Is a Liver Transplant?

Liver transplantation is the last choice of treatment for end-stage liver disease patients.
In this treatment, the patient’s liver is removed and a partial or whole liver of a donor is placed.

When Is a Liver Transplant Necessary?

  • Decompensated liver cirrhosis
  • Liver cirrhosis with associated complications such as uncontrolled ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy
  • Biliary atresia
  • Acute fulminant hepatic failure
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Budd-Chiari syndrome
  • Metabolic disorders (e.g. Wilson's disease)
  • Primary or secondary biliary cirrhosis
