- We have been focusing on adopting various world-class information infrastructures since the time of foundation to enhance comfort and satisfaction of all patients as well as operational efficiency and R&D achievements by our professionals. We stand at the vanguard of merge between clinical practices and modern technologies and are continuously contributing to innovation by developing the latest computer information system that eliminates the need for paper charts.
OCS is the first electronic information system established within SMC. It is an electronic prescription system connecting doctors, nurses, testing rooms, pharmacies and all departments with security clearance. When the doctor prepares and sends a prescription on the system, the information is instantaneously transmitted to all relevant departments. All necessary details about the prescription are stored in the patient record for the doctor’s reference. The entire procedure is free from any paperwork. We set up the nation’s first OCS in 1994 that successfully eliminated the shortcomings of the paper-based system and went through the makeover in 2003 into the Samsung Medical Information System 2003 (SMIS 2003) to achieve a more reliable and dynamic performance.
The state-of-the-art PACS transmits diagnostic images of X-ray, CT and MRI online, enabling the medical staff to offer expedited, accurate diagnosis and reducing the inconvenience of carrying around film. Thus, it contributes greatly to enhancing operational efficiencies, and the record is safe from being misfiled or destroyed. A total of 218 PACS terminals are currently installed throughout all departments, operating rooms and wards, boasting the largest scale worldwide.
EMR in its initial stage was admittedly no more than a centralized record warehouse. However, through continuous advancements, it proved to be highly effective in increasing the direct nursing time in 1999 when it was test-run by nurses in charge of wards. EMR for physicians was put into pilot practice in March 2001 throughout 4 selected wards of 3 departments - the Department of Cardiology, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Department of Ophthalmology - and launched in all wards in 2002. We linked the existing OCS with EMR and reorganized them into a comprehensive information system in 2003 to realize better clinical services and productivity.
We set up the nation’s first website dedicated to patient referral services, through which physicians from SMC partner hospitals can access and retrieve all medical information associated with referred patients. The website also features sections to exchange ideas and thoughts with the SMC staff, to organize online communities, and to get a glimpse of the latest happenings within the medical community.
SMC started using a new voice and data service system developed for the personnel on August 4, 2003 for the first time in Korea using public network and the portable personal communication device called Smart Phone (model number: MITs 3300, Samsung Electronics). The Mobile Hospital provides convenient and immediate access to a broad spectrum of patient and hospital-related information and diverse telecommunication services. It is anticipated to improve operational efficiencies of the medical personnel who are constantly on the move.
