Relief Activities Abroad
Kobe Earthquake

SMC is actively engaged in relief activities not only in Korea, but also in our neighboring countries, such as Taiwan and Kobe of Japan that suffered the catastrophic incidents of earthquake. Therefore, SMC is contributing to uplifting the reputation of Korea and is leading the way in practicing love for the entire humanity.
The earthquake that struck Kobe of Japan on January 17, 1995 was a severe earthquake that measured 6 on the Richter scale. According to statistics produced by the National Police Agency of Japan, this catastrophe led to 4693 death and 447 missing persons. Over 200,000 residents became the victims of this calamity. Together with rescue operations, relief activities for these people were urgently needed.
As a part of the relief activities performed by Samsung Group, SMC dispatched the medical service team in order to relieve the suffering of the earthquake victims in Kobe. The first team consisted of 3 doctors and 6 nurses provided charity services for the residents of Kobe from January 29 to February 8. By sending medical teams three times over the period of one month, SMC practiced love for humanity in Kobe by performing relief activities with supporters not only from Korea, but also from all over the world.
Earthquake in Taiwan

A strong earthquake measuring 7.3 ~ 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the central region of Taiwan at 1:47 a.m. on September 21, 1999. The Taiwanese government declared the state of national emergency and immediately set upon controlling the situations.
On September 23, two days after the earthquake in Taiwan, SMC organized the ‘Medical Support Team for Taiwan’ with 2 doctors, 1 pharmacist, 3 nurses and 1 supporting staff and sent the team to the earthquake-stricken region in Taiwan. The team set up a temporary clinic in Taizhoung in the central region of Taiwan that had suffered the most severe damage as the epicenter of the earthquake. Over the period of 6 days, the team treated the total of 708 patients and received great responses from the local residents.
