Brain Tumor Center
The Brain Tumor Team, rather than performing as a single department, is working closely with other relevant departments. This team comprises with the fellows and a professional nurse from the Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Department of Endocrinology, Department of Pediatrics and Department of Neurology.
The Brain Tumor Team is organized to maximize treatment results under close coordination and collaboration among the subdivided fields, such as pituitary tumors, skull base tumors, pediatric brain tumors, malignant brain tumors and metastatic brain tumors. Already, our team has achieved the remarkable results. As for the field of neurosurgery, our team, pursuing to be the best brain tumor center, has operated the largest number of clinical cases in Korea.
SMC’s Brain Tumor Team is using a variety of cutting-edge techniques to maximize the effects of surgery without complications. For safe and effective surgery, we are using not only the basic instruments, but also the latest intraprerative neurophysiologic monitoring unit, stereotactic frame, stereotactic endoscopy, functional MRI an PET as well as the 24-hour EEG. For intensive care before and after surgery, we are running a 12-bed neurosurgery intensive care unit. In addition, since the introduction of Gamma Knife radiosurgery on December 2001, the count of operations is increasing each year.
For malignant tumor treatment, the Brain Tumor Team is working in collaboration with the relevant departments to provide the best medical service to our patients. As an example, in 2004, we opened our brain cancer clinic and obtained the best treatment results especially on malignant brain tumor patients. By applying systematic treatment plants (one-stop service), we were able to not only improve convenience of treating patients, but also enhance treatment results and quality of life for the patients of incurable brain tumor.
Brain Tumor Team is endeavoring to achieve better treatment through clinical and basic studies on chemotherapy and radiation therapy in order to treat the incurable tumors. In the days ahead, we will continuously exert the best effort to become the world’s best brain tumor center.
