The Colorectal Cancer Center at SMC is providing the best medical service from diagnosis and treatment to follow-up management of colorectal cancer patients through organic collaboration among departments. With active joint research activities, regular operation conferences and group conferences, the medical staff from various departments exchange opinions to provide the best treatments to all our patients. Through this effort, the Colorectal Cancer Center is advancing as the leader of colorectal cancer treatment in Korea. Led by Professor Jeon Ho-gyeong from the Department of Surgery, the Colorectal Cancer Center is staffed with one coordinator and the faculty in charge of colorectal cancer treatment from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Department of Gastroenterology, Department of Gastrointestinal Radiology, Department of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Radiation Oncology and Department of Pathology.
Through multidisciplinary colorectal cancer clinic, we provide the same-day collaborative treatments to minimize the patients’ burden of having to make repeated visits to the hospital. For inpatients waiting for surgery, we are applying CP (clinical pathway) to promote standardization of our treatment. Also, by minimizing the period of stay in hospital, we are assisting our patients in returning to their everyday lives as quickly as possible after surgery. The Colorectal Cancer Center administers continuous follow-up observation through the regular outpatient visits and according to the examination schedule. Therefore, patients can obtain a better understanding of their conditions and the treatment plans to be followed in the future. In addition, we offer high-quality patient-centered services by operating the special clinics of hereditary colorectal cancer and ostomy clinic.
By establishing the treatment protocol for colorectal cancer patients, we are establishing the foundation for high-quality clinical studies. Also, through efficient communication, we are focusing on developing new treatments, such as by introducing experimental treatment techniques and activating clinical tests, etc. In addition, we are organizing symposiums for collaboration and exchange with the leading cancer centers in Korea and overseas countries to activate studies in the related fields. The Colorectal Cancer Center is also endeavoring to enhance the educational function through training of the professors and the residents.
The Colorectal Cancer Center is organizing various presentations for colorectal cancer patients and their families three times a week. This will help facilitate and increase their adaptability to cancer treatment by providing them with information on the latest treatments of colorectal cancer. Also, on the annual ‘Colorectal Cancer Patients’ Day’, we offer open lectures, etc. on the health-related information. Colorectal Cancer Center will exert the best effort to be the global leader in treatment and research of colorectal cancer. We will continuously endeavor to increase the efficiency of our medical service through customized treatment and to assist our patients in leading happy lives both physically and mentally.
