SMC introduced Gamma Knife radiosurgery on December 2001 and has been administering treatments in full scale since January 2002.
Among the currently available radiation surgery devices, Gamma Knife radiosurgery produces the highest accuracy, therefore 250 units are being installed and used by hospitals all over the world including the US and Japan. In Korea, Gamma Knife was established as the foremost radiation surgery technique after the 1990s.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is used in approximately 20 ~ 30% of brain surgeries, such as for a variety of brain tumors and cerebral arteriovenous malformations, with the exception of external wounds. Recently, Gamma Knife radiosurgery is also used in the surgeries for trigeminal neuralgia, Parkinson’s disease and palsy, etc.
