The Gynecologic Cancer Center provides the expedited and accurate diagnoses on and offers the most optimized treatments for endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer, of which the onset frequency is increasing recently together with cervical cancer, one of the commonest gynecologic cancers in Korea.
The Gynecologic Cancer Center is staffed with faculty members from the Gynecologic Tumor Division as well as the Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Pathology and Department of Radiology. Our team also includes a professional nurse specializing in gynecologic tumor, fellows in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and research staff for the basic studies of the field. At SMC, we annually have approximately 500 new gynecologic cancer patients and administer approximately 350 cases of surgical operations.
In diagnosing and examining patients, we are providing the same-day service at the first visits of outpatients in order to reduce the time required until receiving treatments. Also, rather than examinations conducted during hospital stay, we are administering radiological and endoscopic tests on an outpatient basis. When the method of treatment is confirmed as surgery on the patient’s first visit, we set the date of surgery on the same day.
In order to effectively implement the collaborative system in diagnosis and treatment, we organize conferences every Monday to set treatment plans for patients. The faculty from the Department of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Hematology and Oncology and from the Gynecologic Tumor Division in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology exchange opinions on the treatment plans and establish plans to suit characteristics of each patient.
In addition, we are endeavoring to work together with overseas cancer centers in relation to the latest studies on gynecologic cancer and treatment for patients with serious cases and those suffering from rare diseases. We also actively accommodate new treatments by participating in the multinational and multi-organizational joint clinical research projects covering the entire aspects of gynecologic cancer.
We develop the standardized practice guidelines through inter-departmental conferences and treat our patients according to the guidelines.
At the end of each year, the Gynecologic Cancer Center holds the event called ‘Gynecologic Cancer Patients’ Day’ to provide our patients and their families with opportunities of education. This event is receiving great responses from our patients as it gives them encouragement and support.
