Head and Neck Cancer Team at SMC mainly comprises with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Department of Head and Neck Surgery as well as the Department of Radiation Oncology and Department of Hematology and Oncology in charge of making diagnoses and treatments. According to the area and scope of surgery, we often work in collaboration with the Department of (Constructive) Plastic Surgery, Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Thoracic Surgery and Department of Ophthalmology. We receive assistance in the course of diagnostic examination from the Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology and Department of Nuclear Medicine. Also, the Department of Prosthodontics, Dysphagia and Voice/ Speech Clinic, Department of Anesthesiology and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, etc. closely cooperate with us in treating head and neck cancer patients. A nurse specializing in the head and neck cancer is working hard to successfully maintain the close inter-departmental collaboration system and is also directly engaged in dealing with education and research activities as well as the statistics and treatments of the head and neck cancer patients.

SMC’s Department of Head and Neck Surgery currently comprises 3 professors, 1 fellow, 2 speech therapists, 2 basic medicine researchers and 1 nurse specializing in head and neck cancer. Through close collaboration with other relevant departments, we are endeavoring to provide the best services to our patients. In particular, the case conference held every week since the installation of the team is serving as the basis of the systematic cancer patient treatment. We are also actively collaborating with leading universities and hospitals abroad, such as the University of Iowa and the University of Pittsburgh, to lead advancement of the head and neck surgery in Korea. As such, Head and Neck Cancer Team is equipped with the best conditions in Korea in terms of diagnosing  treating diseases, patients’ satisfaction and basic clinical research projects.

Currently, we are operating the specialized head and neck tumor clinic and voice  speech clinic. In addition, we are extensively dealing with diseases of great difficulties in treatment, such as upper respiratory stenosis, skull base tumor, vascular malformations in the head and neck, maxillofacial trauma and plastic surgery and reconstruction of facial palsy, etc.
