Transplants are treatment wherein organs are replaced by surgery. Grafts are taken from donors and placed into recipients whose matching organs or tissues have deteriorated to functional failure due to injuries or diseases and cannot be repaired through other treatment options. Currently, organs that may be transplanted are such solid organs as the heart, lung, liver, kidney, small intestines, and tissues including heart valves, corneas, skin and bone. Transplants with an organ or tissue from a living donor are called living donor transplants and that from a non-living donor is called cadaver donor transplants. We are one of the nation’s most highly regarded transplant centers, having continually expanded the depth and breadth of organ transplants since our 1994 opening. We have pioneered numerous clinical advances in a surprisingly short period of time and are particularly at the forefront of renal and liver transplants both locally and globally. Our world-class services and programs received great evaluations at the International Liver Transplant Symposium organized by the Center in November 1997, placing SMC among the world’s best transplant service providers.
