Recently, thyroid cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women - more than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer, etc. Thyroid cancer ranges widely from papillary carcinoma or follicular carcinoma of which the prognosis is relatively good to undifferentiated carcinoma of the fatal progress. As of the different prognoses per different types of thyroid cancer, the diagnosis or treatment methods also vary widely. This includes the unique radioactive iodine treatment not used in treatment of other cancer varieties.

The Thyroid Cancer Team at SMC consists with the faculty from the Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Surgery, Department of Otorhinolarygology, Department of Radiology, Department of Pathology, Department of Radiation Oncology and Department of Nuclear Medicine. The Thyroid Cancer Team has already implemented the collaborative system of a ‘Thyroid Tumor Clinic’ to provide a ‘one-stop service’ through which all tests are completed on the same day as the hospital visit. In addition, through the regular or irregular case conferences, our team is discussing on problematic cases and establishing future treatment plans. Thyroid Cancer Team is also hard at studying and researching this disease. Currently, we are engaged in the studies to locate the genes that cause thyroid cancer, examine trial materials that suppress tumor growth, analyze the growth inhibition mechanism and introduce new diagnosis and treatment techniques, etc.

As the special care team of the Korea’s foremost leading hospital, Thyroid Cancer Team at SMC is endeavoring to provide faster and more accurate service to our patients.
