Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Diagnosed with Smart Watch

 

A study has found that a smart watch (Galaxy Watch 4), which is a wearable device, can help diagnose obstructive sleep apnea.

 

The 'Galaxy Watch 4' is equipped with a reflective pulse oximeter module at the bottom of the device and when it comes into contact with the skin of the wrist it measures the oxygen saturation of peripheral blood.

 

According to the research team, the 'Galaxy Watch 4' enables continuous and accurate blood oxygen concentration measurement, and the oxygen saturation values ​​of the patients obtained through two devices are very similar. Furthermore, it showed the possibility of diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea with 90% sensitivity and 80% accuracy when predicting the presence or absence of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea by calculating the frequency of decrease in oxygen saturation measured with the 'Galaxy Watch 4'.

 

The research team announced, "With the Galaxy Watch 4, you can easily monitor your daily sleep quality and pattern as well as manage your sleep and health on your own with appropriate feedback."

 

Professor Joo, Eun Yun stated, “With the help of a smart watch, it is possible to easily detect and treat obstructive sleep apnea problems by measuring oxygen saturation during sleep and would be a great help in preventing brain/cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases related to sleep and breathing disorders.”

 

Meanwhile, this study was published in the latest issue of Sleep Health, a renowned American journal of the National Sleep Foundation.
