Samsung Medical Center Achieves 15,000 Robotic Surgeries

Samsung Medical Center achieved 15,000 robotic surgeries and held a ceremony on the 9th.

Since the opening of Samsung Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2008, Samsung Medical Center has been growing rapidly every year by introducing robotic surgery. It exceeded 10,000 cases in 2020, and in June 2022, surpassing 15,000 cases in two years. Specifically, in 2021 alone, about 2,700 robotic surgeries were performed, ranking 10th in the world. Among them, 1,700 cases of genitourinary cancer, including prostate cancer, were ranked first in Korea and third in the world.

Based on these achievements, Intuitive Surgical, Inc, a manufacturer of surgical robots, designated Samsung Medical Center as the 'Epicenter' in the field of genitourinary cancer for the first time in Korea this year. Epicenter refers to a place that Intuitive Surgical, Inc selects and designates only hospitals and institutions with excellent robotic surgery facilities and capabilities worldwide.

Samsung Medical Center currently operates six robotic surgery equipment and to further improve the development of robotic surgery, it plans to add another in the near future to operate a total of seven. Professor Jeon, Seong Soo, head of Robotic Surgery Center, stated, “Robotic surgery, a field of advanced medicine, is meaningful only when the best results are obtained for patients” and continued, "as we have done so far, we will strive to advance robotic surgery in order to provide optimal treatment to patients.”
