How is Influenza diagnosed?

Diagnosis of Influenza

Rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) work by detecting the parts of the virus that stimulate an immune response. These tests can provide results within approximately 10-15 minutes but may not be accurate.

Rapid molecular assays detect genetic material of the influenza virus, produce results in 15-20 minutes and are more accurate than RIDTs.

How is Influenza treated?

Treatments for Influenza

Treatment of influenza with antiviral medications works best when started within 1-2 days after influenza symptoms begin.

It is very important that influenza antiviral drugs are started as soon as possible to treat patients who are increased risk of serious complications, such as people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, or heart diseases.
