Does having lymph nodes removed mean I will definitely develop lymphedema?
- No. Only some people who have lymph nodes removed go on to develop lymphedema, and the risk is lower when fewer nodes are taken. Being aware of the early signs and reporting them quickly gives the best chance of keeping any swelling under control.
Can lymphedema be cured?
- Lymphedema is usually a long-term condition rather than one that is permanently cured, but in most cases it can be managed very effectively. With treatment such as compression, specialized massage, and exercise, many people keep the swelling well controlled over the long term.
Can lymphedema appear years after my treatment?
- Yes. Although it often develops within the first months or years, lymphedema can also appear much later, which is why it is worth staying alert to changes in the arm or hand long after treatment ends.
