What Is Back Pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for doctor visits and can range from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing discomfort. It may be localized to the lower back or radiate down the legs. While most back pain improves within a few weeks, some cases may be chronic or linked to serious underlying conditions.

Causes and Risk Factors of Back Pain

  • Mechanical causes: Muscle or ligament strain, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis.
  • Injury: Falls, accidents, sports injuries.
  • Other conditions: Osteoporosis, kidney stones, infections, tumors.
  • Risk factors: Age (more common over 40), poor posture, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, heavy lifting, smoking, family history of back disorders.

When to Seek Medical Care

See a doctor if back pain lasts more than a few weeks, is severe, or spreads down the leg with numbness or weakness. Urgent care is needed if back pain is associated with loss of bladder or bowel control, unexplained weight loss, fever, or history of cancer.
