Cortisone Shots (Corticosteroid Injections)

Cortisone shots are injections of corticosteroid medication into a joint, tendon, or bursa to reduce inflammation and pain. They are commonly used for arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, and certain spine conditions.

• No major preparation is needed.
• Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, have diabetes, or have any infection.
• Wear loose clothing for easy access to the injection site.

The area is cleaned, and sometimes a local anesthetic is given. The corticosteroid is injected directly into the affected area, often under ultrasound or fluoroscopy guidance. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes.

• Temporary pain or flare at the injection site.
• Skin thinning, loss of color, or infection at the injection site.
• With repeated injections: potential joint damage or tendon weakening.

Relief may begin within days and last weeks to months. Your provider will discuss how often injections can be repeated and may combine them with physical therapy or other treatments.
