What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It reduces or eliminates the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Preparation Guidelines of LASIK Eye Surgery

  • Stop wearing contact lenses for 1–2 weeks before evaluation, as they can change corneal shape.
  • Arrange for transportation, as you cannot drive immediately after surgery.
  • Avoid eye makeup, creams, or lotions on the day of surgery.

What to Expect

LASIK is performed under local anesthesia using numbing eye drops. The surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea, uses a laser to reshape underlying tissue, and then repositions the flap. The procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes.

Risks and Complications of LASIK Eye Surgery

  • Dry eyes, glare, halos, or double vision.
  • Rare complications include infection, flap issues, or under/overcorrection requiring enhancement surgery.
  • Some patients may still need glasses for certain tasks.

Results and Follow-Up of LASIK Eye Surgery

Vision improves within 24–48 hours for most patients. Follow-up visits are scheduled within the first week and over the next several months. Results are long-lasting, though natural age-related vision changes can still occur.
