Proctoscopy

Proctoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows direct visualization of the rectum and anal canal using a rigid tube with a light source. It is used to investigate rectal bleeding, persistent pain, hemorrhoids, polyps, or suspected cancer.

• A mild enema may be recommended a few hours before the procedure to clear the rectum.
• No fasting is usually required.
• Inform your provider about medications and any rectal conditions.

The proctoscope is gently inserted into the rectum while you lie on your side. Air may be introduced to expand the rectum for better visibility. The exam typically takes 10–15 minutes and may cause brief pressure or discomfort.

• Temporary discomfort, cramping, or minor bleeding.
• Rare complications include rectal perforation or infection.

Results are often available immediately. If suspicious tissue is found, a biopsy may be taken. Your doctor will explain findings and discuss next steps.
