Maternal and Neonatal Intensive Care Center
Integrated Care for High-Risk Pregnancy and Neonatal Health
At Samsung Medical Center, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of care for high-risk mothers, fetuses, and newborns through our integrated Maternal and Neonatal Intensive Care Center. Our multidisciplinary team includes specialists from obstetrics, neonatology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric surgery, pediatric thoracic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatric plastic surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric neurosurgery, laboratory medicine, radiology, internal medicine, and critical care. This collaborative system enables us to diagnose congenital fetal anomalies before birth and deliver optimized care immediately after delivery.
High-Risk Maternal Care
Samsung Medical Center was the first in Seoul to be designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare as a Regional Center for High-Risk Maternal and Neonatal Care. The Department of Obstetrics provides 24/7 emergency care for high-risk pregnancies, including preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, cervical insufficiency, preeclampsia, and postpartum hemorrhage.
Our Maternal-Fetal Intensive Care Unit (MFICU) has 12 beds, offering continuous monitoring and preventive care for expectant mothers. For pregnancies complicated by fetal anomalies, our center offers one-stop fetal evaluations and same-day consultations with pediatric surgical teams. We also collaborate closely with internal medicine and intensive care units to provide comprehensive emergency management for conditions such as preeclampsia and placenta-related complications.
Two dedicated operating rooms within the delivery unit allow for rapid surgical intervention when needed. The MFICU is located adjacent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), ensuring seamless and immediate transfer of newborns requiring critical care.
Expert Neonatal Care from Birth to Recovery and Beyond
Samsung Medical Center's NICU provides advanced, 24/7 care for critically ill and extremely premature infants, including those with congenital anomalies and severe neonatal conditions. The unit is staffed by in-house neonatologists and is equipped to perform on-site neonatal surgeries. It also offers leading-edge therapies such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy), with full neonatal specialist coverage at all times.
We were the first in Korea to introduce 24-hour family visitation and kangaroo care, underscoring our commitment to family-centered neonatal services. Our long-term follow-up program supports healthy growth and neurodevelopment after discharge.
The NICU's close proximity to the delivery suite enables rapid response for newborns requiring intensive treatment. Recently, we treated a 25-week, 260g preterm infant who made a full recovery and was discharged in healthy condition. Through in-unit surgeries, real-time multidisciplinary care, and continuous developmental monitoring, we deliver exceptional outcomes for even the most fragile patients.
