Genitourinary Cancer Center of Samsung Medical Center Performing “1000 Cases of Robotic Partial Nephrectomy”

Genitourinary Cancer Center of Samsung Medical Center has performed 1000 cases of robotic partial nephrectomy for the first time in South Korea. Robotic partial nephrectomy is the latest treatment method that minimizes the kidney function loss caused by surgery and reduces the recovery time much in patients with early kidney cancer.

However, since the kidney has the complex vascular structure, there is a high risk of massive hemorrhage during the surgery so that only experienced surgeons must perform the surgery. Also, the surgery leaves some kidney so that only a successful operation can ensure that cancer recurrence would not occur. The 5-year recurrence rate of genitourinary cancer at Samsung Medical Center is less than 1%, which is excellent.

The excellent results could be achieved because of the know-how obtained from abundant experiences of more than 700 robotic surgeries for prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal pelvic cancer, etc. in 2017 alone.
