SMC becomes Asia’s first ventricular arrhythmia surgery training center
To designate a ventricular arrhythmia surgery training center, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies (JJMDC) selects qualified specialists and medical institutions with surgical experiences and skills and grants their qualifications.
Under this designation of ventricular arrhythmia surgery training center, Samsung Medical Center (SMC) Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic plans to train local and foreign physicians by developing systematic training courses and educational programs.
Since the opening of the Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic in 2015, SMC continues to offer specialized treatment, focusing on radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA). The clinical pathologists and radiologists participating in arrhythmia surgery in the clinic are arrhythmia specialists, who have been certified for their competency in Cardiac Electrophysiology for the Allied Professional as a part of the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE). Clinic Head and Professor Park Kyoung-min of the Division of Cardiology studied for two years since 2010 under Dr. Marchlinski of the Arrhythmia Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, which has been regarded as the world’s best ventricular arrhythmia treatment center.
In addition, SMC’s Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic uses the Carto system, the latest 3D mapping equipment, and an ultrasound device that allows for a direct examination of the heart using an intracardiac ultrasound catheter to perform complex procedures more precisely and safely.
With the support of such infrastructure, SMC Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic conducts more than 100 ventricular arrhythmia surgeries every year. By performing a third of all ventricular arrhythmia procedures in Korea, SMC Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic almost has become a globally renowned institution with its success rate reaching 85% for such surgeries.
