“Robot Base Cutting-Edge Intelligent Hospital” Declaration of Leap

Samsung Medical Center (SMC), taking the opportunity of having been selected as the final condition organization in the “AI-5G based large-scale robot fusion model development support project” organized by the Korea Robot Industry Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, launched a company-wide consultative body to implement a “robot-based cutting-edge intelligent hospital.”

In the relevant project, SMC has taken a role in establishing a standard model of robot-based cutting edge intelligent hospital for many number- and multi-type robots to help patients by providing safer services at the hospital and helping medical staff provide higher-quality medical services.

Following this, the hospital first plans to establish an integrated robot control center where multiple robots can be managed in one place.

Among Korean hospitals, integrating and developing a mobile-based solution system to activate robots with one chatting message anywhere, anytime is in the plan.

When the relevant system is used, like an AI secretary mounted on a modern smartphone, etc., multiple robots can be easily operated by entering simple commands and various numbers.

The multiple robot operating system is planned to be introduced by the year-end

Samsung Medical Center plans to introduce a small logistics robot (one unit), a medical round robot (one unit), and social quarantine fusion robots (two units) until the end of the year, in addition to the logistics transfer robot currently in operation. After a trial operation period, its scale is planned to be gradually expanded.

The hospital, for the first time in Korea, has disclosed a system that manages logistics within the hospital using a large-scale logistics transfer robot.

The said robot automatically transfers diagnostic materials needed within hospital wards using logistics big data at night when there are no patients. The small-scale robot was designed to transfer smaller diagnostic materials than its large-scale counterparts.

In conjunction with the real-time treatment information, a medical round robot is expected to support rounds of the medical staff to promote visual understanding of patients.

It is expected to help patients understand their treatment process by displaying various examination results, currently explained by the physician in charge or the nurse orally, through a display mounted in front.

Social quarantine robots will also be introduced to develop a hospital environment safe from various pathogens, including new infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, etc., and other infection vectors.

Social quarantine robots have a mounted function to eliminate viruses in the air by shooting harmless ultraviolet rays toward walls touched by people and carrying out quarantine activities automatically. In addition, through the front-mounted large display, additional functions such as providing treatment schedules and direction guides, etc. increase its utility.

The President & CEO of Samsung Medical Center Park, Seung Woo said, “This year will be marked as the first year to jump to ‘the robot-based cutting edge intelligent hospital,’” and it shall be the year to lay the groundwork to lead future medicine. Furthermore, he stated, “On the foundation of world top-level IT infrastructure, most efforts will be exerted into implementing ‘digital revolution’ so that patients can experience a new hospital.”
