Genitourinary Cancer Center
The Genitourinary cancer Center is staffed by a team of world-class professors, including seven professors of urology, two professors of radiation oncology, one professor of hematology and oncology, two professors of radiology, and one professor of pathology, as well as nurses specializing in urologic cancer. This center provides the exceptional diagnostic services, treatment, and follow-up to patients with urologic cancer through an organic consultation system, helping patients lead a better life after treatment. Through regular conferences, each department shares its specialized knowledge on urologic cancers with each other to provide cutting-edge treatment to patients with urologic cancer.
Major areas of treatment
Prostate cancer | Renal cancer |
---|---|
Urothelial cancer (bladder cancer, renal pelvic cancer, ureteric cancer) | Testicular cancer |
Penile cancer | Adrenal cancer |
Retroperitoneal cancer | Von Hippel Landau disease |
Strengths
We offer a range of cutting-edge treatment options for urologic cancers, including targeted therapy, chemotherapy and proton therapy for renal cancer.
Four types of surgical methods are available—perineal, retropubic, laparoscopic, and robotic laparoscopic surgery—and they are selected for each patient depending on the specific condition being treated. Diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up is all done by highly skilled medical personnel who select and manage the best treatment plan for each patient through a multidisciplinary approach that brings together specialists from a range of department. To accomplish all this, Samsung’s Genitourinary cancer Center has invested in cutting-edge diagnostic technology and medical equipment:
- MRI guided biopsy
- Best imaging protocol
- Robot system
- High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
- Laparoscopy and endoscopy system
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy
- Radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFA)
- Cryotherapy (Cryotherapy)
Diagnostic methods
The Genitourinary cancer Center performs accurate early diagnosis and evaluation of urologic cancers to provide successful treatment opportunities to patients.
- Transrectal ultrasound (Transrectal ultrasound)
- Computed tomography (CT: computed tomography)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI: magnetic resomance image)
- CT urography (CT urography)
- Positron emission tomography-CT (PET-CT: proton emission tomography)
- Whole body bone scan (whole body bone scan)
- Analysis of molecules, genes, and tumor markers.
Latest treatment methods
- Minimally invasive surgical therapy (laser, single port, laparoscopic, robotic laparoscopic surgery)
- Radiation therapy technology (innovative radiotherapy techniques), proton therapy
- Use of non-surgical methods such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
- Radiofrequency thermal ablation
- Targeted therapies
- Advanced chemotherapy agents
- Hereditary clinic (Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL)
Recent trends in clinical research
The Samsung Medical Center plays a leading role in cancer research with various research and external activities under way to develop new treatment methods that fit different cell types and stages of cancer. We are also trying hard to establish a network for clinical research on urologic cancers in Korea. Through these efforts, we hope to create a database of patients who have been recently diagnosed with urologic cancer, and make a clinical protocol based on the characteristics, treatment trends, treatment results, and prognosis.
