Pediatrics

As a tertiary treatment institution for the health care of children and youths, the Department of Pediatrics is equipped with the features of an educational and training hospital and a research institute.
The eternal goal of the Department of Pediatrics of the Samsung Medical Center, “Making a world of healthy children,” is pursued not only in treatment but also within the shadow of childhood patients through diverse events other than treatment.

Major areas of treatment

The critical patient treatment system, centering on the neonatal intensive care unit and the pediatric intensive care unit, can be said to be at the professional level, and as detailed fields of specialization are activated, patients can meet experts in individual diseases.
The professors’ two rounds per day by area that cannot be seen at other hospitals are quite famous.
The Department of Pediatrics is spurring the introduction of new medical technologies, the construction of cooperative treatment systems with local pediatric clinics and the development of computerization of medical information, and is conducting cutting-edge studies centering on molecular biology thereby publishing over 20 papers in international journals every year as a representative department of pediatrics of Korea in the world. In addition to treatment, the Department of Pediatrics is arranging events that can actually benefit those children that are in need of help such as charity bazaars to help children with incurable diseases. These events are currently helped by a gathering of parents of children with breathing disorders, a gathering of parents of children with MPS (mucopolysaccharide), and a gathering of parents of children with cancer (“Chamsaranghoe”), those were formed spontaneously as the children were hospitalized in the Department of Pediatrics of the Samsung Medical Center.

  • Neonatal unit: The neonatal unit of the Samsung Medical Center was certified as a Baby Friendly Hospital in 1997 by UNICEF. Currently, medical staff specializing in newborns, including more than 20 experts in breast-feeding, which is the largest number in Korea, are providing babies with optimal environments for forming the most natural mother-child relationship.
  • Neonatal intensive care unit: With new medical equipment, including artificial respirators, various monitors, and special gas treatment apparatuses, numbers of medical staff, including professors who majored in newborns, fellows, residents, and skilled nurses are doing their best for the fast recovery of babies.
  • Hospital school: To guarantee the right to learn of child/youth patients, support their successful return to school after treatment, and help their growth into healthy society members through psychological and emotional stability, the Samsung Medical Center has installed and is operating a “Hospital School” by executing a business agreement with the Office of Education.
  • Division of Pediatric Cardiology: We in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology strive to provide our child patients with congenital or acquired heart diseases, and youth and adult patients with congenital heart diseases with the best care possible in close cooperation with other departments, including the Department of Thoracic Surgery.
